Health fair begins city's World AIDS Day events
Columbus More than 17 million people have died of AIDS since the beginning of the epidemic, and on December 1 more than 190 countries will hold events to commemorate those lives lost and to raise awareness about the ongoing global pandemic.
This year's theme is "All Men Make a Difference." The Columbus AIDS Task Force will again coordinate several events throughout Columbus including a health fair, red ribbon awareness campaigns at OSU and Columbus State, condom raids an art contest, and a candlelight vigil in partnership with the United by Our Light Committee.
The World AIDS Day Health Fair begins at 7:30 am at the St. Stephen's Community House at 1500 E. 17th St. The health fair will feature free HIV education and testing, participants include the Columbus AIDS Task Force, Columbus Urban League, OSU Clinical Trials, Escape, Alkebulan and the American Red Cross.
The United By Our Light Candlelight Vigil and names reading will begin at 5:30 pm on the steps of the Columbus Museum of Art at 480 E. Broad St.
CATF director of prevention and education David Andrist noted that it is "especially meaningful that the candlelight service be held at the museum, since December
1 is also A Day Without Art, an event that shares the same purpose as World AIDS Day to honor the memory of those we have lost and to recommit ourselves to the ongoing fight against AIDS." To dedicate a name to be read at the vigil, call 614265-8111.
The candlelight vigil will conclude in time for participants to attend "Celebration of Life," a World AIDS Day service at the Broad Street United Methodist Church at 501 E. Broad St. The event begins at 6:30 pm and features the Columbus Gay Men's Chorus, quilt panel dedications, and names readings. The service is being sponsored by Names Project of Central Ohio, Project Open Hand and the Ohio AIDS Coalition.
CATF will also partner with the Columbus Health Department's Sexual Health Team to provide community-wide HIV testing on December 1. CATF's prevention and education staff have been trained by the health department to provide pre-test counseling and testing so that it can be available in more locations throughout the city.
If you are interested in participating in this global event on a local level, call 614299-2437 and ask for Angela, Tyler, David or Kathryn in the prevention and education department.
